Kangaroo Island

Anne Christie | Bales Beach Kangaroo Island

Bales Beach Kangaroo Island

Bales Beach is located close to Seal Bay, and if you are lucky, you may even see a seal or two for free here. Fishing is not permitted here as it is part of a aquatic reserve. As like many of the beaches on Kangaroo Island, you can often be the only one there.

Anne Christie | Western River

Western River

Western River Cove is one of the nicer beaches on the entire island, and well worth the winding drive out to the coast. The 200 m wide, north facing cove is accessible by car, with a car park and picnic area located behind the beach. A foot bridge crosses the creek to the backing dunes and a track runs along the western rocks to the point.

Pennington Bay Kangaroo Island

My favourite coastal area on the island, Pennington Bay has a high reef that is visible during low tide. Best times to view the reef is during the warmer months.

Pennington Bay Kangaroo Island

My favourite bay on Kangaroo Island, Pennington Bay, is a beautiful spot located on the more populated half of the island. It consists of a series of beaches which can be reached by sets of stairs from the high parking area stretched along their rear. The elevation of the road means there's the scenery can be appreciated both from up high and down on the sand (on my visit the sights even included seals).

Anne Christie | Windmill Bay

Windmill Bay

On the south side of the Cape Willoughby lighthouse is the exposed southern shore. This section is devoid of sand and contains only four small boulder beaches in amongst the cliffs. The first is in Windmill Bay, adjacent to the cape, which houses a 100 m long, large boulder beach, which usually has a heavy surf.
Anne Christie | Chapman River

Chapman River

A favourite for beach lovers, Lashmar Conservation Park adjoins the long sandy beach at Antechamber Bay. The park is an ideal location for swimming, fishing and bird watching and is just a short drive from Cape Willoughby lightstation. The safe relatively shallow waters is ideal for canoeing your way along the tranquil Chapman River which flows through the park and into the sea at Antechamber Bay.

Geraldton Wax

Taken at the Stokes Bay Bush Garden on Kangaroo Island, is this very pretty flower. Bees are particularly attracted to the blooms as they smell of honey. Native to Western Australia it is now grown throughout the cooler climates of Australia.
Anne Christie | Native Hibiscus

Native Hibiscus

The native hibiscus is an Australian native plant which has a beautiful mauve purple hibiscus-like flower and forms a medium sized shrub. Loved by both birds and bees, this plant is a valuable addition to any garden.
Anne Christie | Grevillea

Grevillea

The grevillea flower almost looks like it is from another planet. Their unique flowers in attract native wildlife to feed on the sweet nectar.
