Ready to Play - the Sandboards

In Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, in the deep South of Brazil, Joaquina beach is an international magnet for surfers. But the dunes just behind the beach are a magnet too. Constantly in movement, these great mountains of sand are a superb venue for sandboarding - basically snowboarding on the fine sand. The keenest bring their own board, but for most of us, hiring one of these brightly coloured boards will do.

The Crossing

Taken at the Blue Lagoon in the Lençois Maranheses in Brazil's North East, this end of day shot shows tired visitors making their way back through the dunes on the way home. An area of sand dunes with seasonal lakes is a rare thing, and everything about the Lençois Maranhenses is wonderful - a great place to visit, and certainly photogenic!

The Lone Punter

Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, is a city located on an island of stunning subtropical beauty. A central chain of hills borders a long lagoon, filled by sea water. This solitary punter caught my eye from the high viewpoint en route to Barra da Lagoa.

The Girl from Ipanema

Anyone who visits Ipanema beach in Rio de janeiro has his or her eyes open for her, and I was lucky enough to see her that day. Of course, the real Garota de Ipanema celebrated in Tom Jobim's song is now in her late 70s at least, but every year she is rejuvenated, renewed, and walks the shore again, gently swaying along one of the world's most famous and celebrated beaches.

Like its companion image, The Crossing, this was shot in the wonderful Lençois Maranhenses, in Maranhão state, at the extreme top left of Brazil's North East. In fact, here you are practically at the mouth of the Amazon, although the vegetation would not tell you so!
