This is Walkerwood Reservoir, in Stalybridge. The countryside around the reservoir has been designated a country park, Stalybridge Country Park. This photograph shows the reservoir, and on the left what I believe is a pump house. This building is now derelict, with holes in the roof and signs around it saying it is unsafe to enter. It is behind a big, wrought iron gate and has always intrigued me from being a small child. Walkerwood is the lowet in a series of four reservoirs in the Brushes Valley, the others being being Brushes Reservoir, Lower Swineshaw and Higher Swineshaw.
This photograph was taken on black and white film, and then split toned with yellow and blue tones digitally on the computer.
North Britain farm was sited in a delightful setting at the head of the Brushes Valley high above Stalybridge. The farm was demolished earlier this century when the ground was cleared by the waterworks authority but the area remains largely unspoilt and popular with those seeking respite away from the towns and cities. It is here that Jethro Tinker was born, in 1788. Jethro Tinker was a naturalist, who recorded much of the flora around the Stalybridge area. There is a blue plaque dedicated to him at the entrance to Stalybridge Country Park.

In late August, the heather growing on the moors above stalybridge flowers a beautiful purple colour. At sunset, this gives a stunning display of nature at it's best.
