More accurately located at the hamlet of Reading Street near Tenterden, the church was originally built by the Saxons on an island called now known as Chapel Bank in the River Rother estuary to serve the nearby port of Smallhythe. Over the centuries the river’s course was altered and the island became part of the mainland and the port moved to the coast. After lightning and fire the remains of the church were moved by the Victorians and restored.

On Saturday 15 August 2015, whilst in its final year of operation Avro Vulcan XH558 'Spirit Of Great Britain' overflew the very beach at Reculver in Kent where in 1943 another Avro design, the Lancaster, performed the trial drops of bombs that were to be used a few days later on Operation Chastise by 617 squadron 'The Dambusters'. This is a combined image from stock images both shot by the artist.

The remains of the priory buildings are now part of a private house. Outside, the great Yew tree by the porch is said to be 1,600 years old. The church itself has a Norman chancel which the monks would have used with the parishioners restricted to the nave.
