Over The Thames To Streatley

The view from the north bank of the River Thames at Goring in Oxfordshire,looking across to Streatley village and Streatley Hill, or Lardon Chase in Berkshire. Here the Thames flows between the North Wessex or Berkshire Downs to the south and the Chiltern Hills to the north, this feature being known as the Goring Gap. The weirs here once provided the power for water mills and now control the flow of the river. Only one working mill survives, further downstream at Mapedurham.

The Erasmusbrug Rotterdam

The Erasmusbrug or Erasmus Bridge is an important structure in the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Completed in 1996 It crosses the Nieuwe Maas, connecting the north and south areas of the city and is named after Erasmus, the Renaissance humanist. 802m (2631ft) long, the design combines both a cable-stayed and bascule bridge, this image showing the cable-stayed end. It has now become part of Rotterdam's logo. This image has added textures and toning.

An old brick bridge taking the towpath over a stream at Cookham, Berkshire. It's certainly seen better days but the Thames Path skirts it so you don't have to walk over it! The Thames Path is a long-distance trail which follows the river all the way from Cricklade in the Cotswold Hills to the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, London. Cookham, on the banks of the Thames is a village lying in the furthest north-east corner of Berkshire, England. Here the artist Sir Stanley Spencer lived and painted. This image has added textures to give a pencil drawing effect.

An artistic view of the bridge over the River Thames at Clifton Hampden in Oxfordshire. This handsome bridge with its gothic arches was built in 1867 to replace a previous ferry service which had existed since medieval times. The architect was Sir George Gilbert Scott who also designed the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras. It was originally a toll bridge but this ended in 1946 when the local councils bought it from the private owners. This view is from the Thames Path national trail. The image has added textures.

Boathouses on the banks of the River Thames at Goring-on-Thames opposite the lock and just upstream from the old mill. Goring is an extremely picturesque village on the north bank of the Thames in Oxfordshire, just over the river from Streatley in Berkshire. Here the river flows through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills in the north and the Berkshire or North Wessex Downs in the south. Being so picturesque, Goring is a favourite location for photographers and painters - including JM Turner! This image has a textured finished in the style of a pencil drawing.

The 12th century parish church of All Saints stands on the banks of the Thames and is next door to Bisham Abbey, the National Sports Centre. A footbridge over the River Pang in the watermeadows adjacent to the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire. The footpath leads from Pangbourne and follows the river, crossing here to emerge at Tidmarsh a mile or so away. The Pang is a chalk stream which rises in Compton on the Berkshire Downs (although this is dependant on rainfall) and flows through West Berkshire to join the Thames at Pangbourne. It has a wide variety of wildlife, supported by a large nature reserve at Tidmarsh. A digital art image with textures added to my original photograph.

Steps leading from the promenade to the sands of Porthcressa Beach at Hugh Town on St Mary's - the largest of the Isles of Scilly. The beach lies at the southern edge of the town which is the largest town and the administrative centre of the Scillies. The islands forming this archipelago lie about 25 miles off the south west coast of Cornwall and the only ways of reaching them are by boat or light aircraft. Cruise ships often lie at anchor off the harbour at Hugh Town.

Memories of Notre Dame

Looking along the River Seine to the magnificent cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris before the fire in August 2019. This image has been given an art finish. Work starting on its construction in 1150 and It was completed in 1260 but was added to over succeeding centuries. It was badly damaged during the French Revolution and then, during renovation work in 2019 was extremely seriously damaged when it caught fire but hopefully reconstruction will be successful and it will stand proudly once more.

This city, the second largest in Portugtal, lies on its north west coast at the point where the Douro meets the Atlantic Ocean. An artistic view of the approach to Woodbridge in Suffolk along the footpath beside the River Deben. Woodbridge lies about 9 miles from the Suffolk coast on the tidal stretch of the river - used to power the tide mill on the quay.. The town was once known for shipbuilding, rope-making and sail-making - and apparently some of Drake's warships were built here. The Deben flows from here to Felixtowe where it meets the sea. This stretch is a haven for wildlife being a Special Protection Area.

A charcoal drawing effect from an original photograph of Aira Force - a magical waterfall in England's Lake District. The river - the Aira Beck - flows from the heights of Stybarrow Dodd - 2,362 feet above sea level, eventually flowing into Ullswater - having first dropped 70 feet over this waterfall. The name 'Aira' is apparently from the Norse 'eyrr' meaning gravelly bank - the river flows through a gravelly spit as is meets the lake. The woodland was landscaped in Victorian times.

The tide mill on the River Deben quayside at Woodbridge, Suffolk. This is the 'newest' of the mills that have stood on this site having been built in the 1600s. The earliest recorded mill here was in 1170. During th middle ages it was run by the local Augustinian priory but at the time of the Dissolution it passed into the hands of Henry VIII. It operated until 1957 sfter which it became derelict. However, following subsequent restoration it was re-opened in 1973. My original photograph with added textures.

A scene captured late in the afternoon on the River Deben near Woodbridge in Suffolk with an impressionist finish. This is the tidal stretch of the river which flows on to meet the North Sea at Felixtowe. Not only popular as a centre for watersports, particularly sailing and canoeing, this is an important ecological area - designated as a RAMSAR site (protected wetland) and an AONB (Area of Outsrtanding Natural beauty. A riverside path leads into the town of Woodbridge and its quayside.

An impressionist's view of a typical street in Amsterdam - consisting mainly of one of the city's many canal highways. Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands (though the seat of government is The Hague) started life as a fishing village in the C12th. But apparently, following floods in the 1170s, the locals built a dam and bridge across the Amstel River - hence its name. Unsurprisingly, one of the best ways to see the city is to travel by boat along its beautiful tree-lined waterways.

A view over the River Thames to the town of Abingdon in Oxfordshire. The spire of St Helen's Church dominates the scene - a well known landmark to users of the Thames. It inspired the artist JMW Turner who featured it in a painting called 'Abingdon'. This ancient town is now in Oxfordshire although until relatively recently it was in Berkshire and was at one time the county town. This image was captured on a sunny winter's day. Textures applied in post processing to simulate a drawing.

The suspension bridge crossing the Menai Straits, connecting the island of Anglesey to mainland Wales viewed here from Anglesey. Before the bridge, the only means of crossing was by ferry - risky due to the fast flowing waters of the Straits. Cattle going to market on the mainland had to swim over - many being swept away by the currents! The bridge was designed by Thomas Telford, work starting in 1819 and finishing in 1826. It was designed so tall ships could sail undeneath.

A boat (possibly steam) chugging up the River Alde at Snape in Suffolk. It's here that the river becomes tidal as it flows on past Aldeborough from which it takes its name - to meet the North Sea near Orford and for its last few miles becomes the River Ore. This is an important ecological area - a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as well as being an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In 1588, 4 ships were launched from here to fight the Spanish Armada. Now we find sailing clubs!

On the opposite (Remenham) bank is the world famous Leander Rowing Club. Founded in 1818 it's one of the oldest rowing clubs in the world and the oldest non-academic one.

A Thames sailing barge at the quayside in Woodbridge, Suffolk. These barges were once a common sight along the Thames estuary and the east coast of England. Being flat-bottomed and with a shallow draught they could negotiate the shallower areas of the Thames, its estuary and the tributary rivers. Woodbridge is a picturesque town on the River Deben in Suffolk. The quay area is full of photographic opportunities and in the background here is the old weatherboarded tide mill.

Chepstow Castle in Monmouthshire, Wales, standing above a crossing point on the River Wye, is one of the oldest castles in Britain and it boasts the oldest doors in Europe! Building began in 1067 under William Fitz Osbern, forming the southernmost in a chain of castles guarding the Welsh Marches. It was later used in the conquest of Gwent in the 12th century. In the 1600s, it became a Royalist stronghold but after the Civil War it fell into disuse. This image was captured from the public footpath surrounding the castle.

The Abbey Mill At Tewkebury

The Abbey Mill in the ancient town of Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire. It stands on a stretch nof the River Avon appropriately called the Mill Avon. Although now residential, the mill started life in about 1190 asd the corn mill for the nearby abbey. It is said that the monks excavated the Mill Avon - joining further on with the River Severn - to drive the water wheel. It was then rebuilt in 1793 and had four uindershot wheels - the remains of one still in evidence. It ceased working in 1920.

The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal as it passes through the village of Talybont on Usk in Powis, South Wales. This isolated canal which meanders through the Brecon Beacons National Park was originally designed to carry coal and iron to Newport on the Welsh coast. At present the section from the canal basin at Brecon to Pontnewydd is the only navigable part but plans are in place to eventually extend this to Newport.

A quiet backwater at Goring on Thames, Oxfordshire. Here the water is calm having rushed through the mill and now makes its way back to the main river. On the far bank is the church of St Thomas of Canterbury. Goring is a small village on the north bank of the Thames and is joined to Streatley on the south bank by an attractive road bridge. Here the river runs through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs. The house in the background belonged to George Michael.

A Riverside Seat At Chepstow

A bench overlooking the old road bridge at Chepstow, Monmouthshire in Wales. This graceful cast iron bridge crosses River Wye connecting Wales with Gloucestershire in England. Designed by John Rastrick of Bridgenorth, it is supported by enormous piers to withstand the force of the tidal flow. Here the water can rise and fall up to 14 metres - one of the highest ranges in the world!

A view of Marlow on Thames in Buckinghamshire looking downstream towards the suspension bridge. This bridge, opened in 1832 and designed by by William Tierney Clark links Buckinghamshire with Berkshire on the south bank. It is also the model for the Szechenyl Chain Bridge over the River Danube in Budapest. To the left is the parish church of All Saints which dates from 1835 and replaced a 12th century building which had been demolished. This stretch of the Thames is famous for rowing.

The lovely old mill at Hambleden on the River Thames in Buckinghamshire, sitting just above the exceptionally long weir. Walkers can cross the weir on a footway which leads to Hambleden Lock on the Berkshire bank. From here the Thames Path leads upstream to Henley on Thames and downstream to Marlow. The mill itself has ancient origins and was apparently mentioned in the Domesday Book! More recently it has been converted into flats.

A stretch of the River Kennet at Burghfield in Berkshire,as it winds its way towards Reading. This is a navigable stretch of the river which forms part of the Kennet and Avon Canal. Here it is quiet after flowing under the roaring traffic of the M4. A little further on it passes Burghfield Mill, a large Georgian building now converted to flats. The Kennet and Avon was constructed in the early 1800s to connect Bristol with London via Reading, mainly to carry Bath stone for buildings.

The towpath by the Kennet and Avon Canal leading eastwards into the town of Hungerford in West Berkshire. During the mid 1800s, this was a thriving industrial area lined with canalside industrial buildings. Boats would have been busy loading and unloading goods such as Bath stone for building the new mansions in London. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames at Reading with Bristol, enabling goods to be transported smoothly from London to Bristol.

A cottage down a country lane in the village of Sulham, Berkshire. The village lies at the foot of a steep and wooded hill just to the south of Pangbourne. Several of the cottages in Sulham are in this rather whimsical 'ornamental cottage' style, having been built in the mid 1800s by the local landowners, the Wilder family, who lived in nearby Sulham House.

The view from the north bank of the River Thames at Goring in Oxfordshire,looking across to Streatley village and Streatley Hill, or Lardon Chase in Berkshire. Here the Thames flows between the North Wessex or Berkshire Downs to the south and the Chiltern Hills to the north, this feature being known as the Goring Gap. The weirs here once provided the power for water mills and now control the flow of the river. Only one working mill survives, further downstream at Mapedurham.
