St Marys Lighthouse and island lie north of the River Tyne and Whitley Bay on the North Sea coast of England. The lighthouse is no longer in operation and is now a museum and tourist attraction which is only accessible at low tide when the causeway is not under water. The image was taken on a warm October morning shortly after sunrise with a lovely soft light illuminating the lighthouse and the sand ripples all under interesting cloud formations.

This Glass Bottom Boat is one a a number of such vessels which provide trips around the harbour at Mahon on the Balearic Island of Menorca. The trips take about an hour or so to go right around the harbour which is the second largest natural harbour in the world after Pearl Harbour in Hawaii.

It has been featured in a prime time advert for BP and more recently has been used in the filming of the TV crime drama Vera.

Hastings Garden is located on top of the bastions on the West side of the entrance to Valletta; the recently embellished gardens offer a magnificent view of Floriana, Msida, Sliema, Manoel Island and Marsamxett Harbour and is the home to a monument raised in honor of Lord Hastings who was a former British governor of Malta. Even though the gardens are relatively small they are still very attractive and provide a quiet, shaded place to rest away from the bustle of Valletta itself. Seaton Sluice Watch House - Panorama
The Watch House on Rocky Island in Seaton Sluice was opened on 14th January 1880, built for the Seaton Sluice Volunteer Life-Saving Company which was founded earlier in 1876. The building served as an auxiliary coast guard station until 1990. The building is now a museum owned by Northumberland County Council and run in collaboration with the Local History Society. This image was shot as the sun rose behind the Watch House, illuminating the golden sky and was then given a panorama crop.

These vibrant wild poppies have bloomed unexpectedly on an overgrown building site in Blyth, Northumberland. The beauty of their texture and colour is a reminder of the wild nature that surrounds us. Unfortunately, the building work prevented these poppies from seeding themselves and coming back the following year.

Rocky Island in Seaton Sluice Northumberland was formed when a channel was cut through the headland to to provide a new entrance to the small tidal harbour between 1761 and 1764. The small island is a popular place for dog walking and just taking a seat to enjoy the view northwards over the sandy bay towards Blyth.

After a prolonged period of dry weather, there was overnight rain and this really perked up the wild flowers in the sand dunes between Blyth and Seaton Sluice in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. This image features a couple of Dog Roses (Rosa canina) and some Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) looking nicely refreshed under a blue sky.

There is a small tidal harbour in the village where the Seaton Burn runs into the North Sea which is used mainly for small pleasure and fishing boats. Azaleas are flowering shrubs of the Rhododendron family and can be evergreen or deciduous and are suitable for growing in pots on a patio. This particular specimen has lovely shiny leaves which stay with the shrub all year long providing interest long after the lovely red flowers have died off.

There cannot be many better simple pleasures than messing about in a boat on a calm river under a blue sky and summer sunshine, and there cannot be many better places to do it than Knaresborough. The picturesque town of Knaresborough is situated on the River Nidd in North Yorkshire and is rightly famous as a market and spa town. There have been boats for hire on the river for many decades and the pastime is just as popular today as it ever was.

The town of Limone on Lake Garda in Italy is usually one of the busiest places on the lake with tourists swarming around the picturesque surroundings. This day in May was overcast and with rain threatening, the number of people using the lake ferries was reduced, but the attraction of this lovely place was still evident.

This is not what the tourists or the hoteliers of Sirmione were hoping for in the middle of May! A particularly wet day on Lake Garda in the main piazza of Sirmione with bedraggled tourists huddled under umbrellas in the unusually wet and cold conditions with everybody but the ducks complaining!!! Tynemouth Long Sands on the North East Coast of England pictured on a warm summer morning, but with a cold wind. This stretch of beach is very popular at all times of the year with dog walkers and strollers, and this image shown the northerly view just as the sun managed to break through the cloud cover and seemed to illuminate both the beach and the surf.

Collingwood took over as commander following the death of Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. Four cannon from his ship Royal Sovereign are mounted at the base of the monument. There is a seagull perched on the Admiral's head and the ruins of Tynemouth Castle can be seen in the background.

Misty March Morning
A very cold March sunrise from the beach at Blyth in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. The relatively (!!) warm North Sea has caused the cold air to leave a light mist over the water and a low lying cloud has produced a very Turner like image (well it does to my mind!) but these conditions were not bad enough to put off the surfers who braved the weather.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch House
The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch House is situated on cliffs at the mouth of the River Tyne in North East England. This building was the first of its kind to be formed in 1864 and it is still used as an operational base for the emergency services as well as a museum. The building was re-opened in 2014 after major restoration works carried out with the help of a Heritage Lottery Fund award. This image was captured on a sunny March morning.

Fort St Elmo is situated at the end of the peninsula which houses the city of Valletta and is positioned to give it a view of both the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour, with a history going back centuries. It played an enormous part in defending Malta during The Great Siege by the Ottoman Empire in 1565. Today it houses the National War Museum and The Siege Bell war memorial. The Pinto Stores in Valletta, Malta were commissioned by Grand Master Pinto in the 1750s at the height of the 'Baroque Movement' . These warehouses were used for the storage of silk, dried fruits and olive oil going westwards, and for the storage of food and arms arriving in port. The warehouses were rented to local merchants and European agents. The area was bombed during the second World War and were re-constructed together with the ancient seawall which was originally built by the Knights of Saint John. Mdina was once the capital city of Malta before Valletta took the honour and is know as 'The Silent City'

North Sea Sunrise
Dramatic sunrise over the Northumbrian coast off the beach at Blyth. A strong onshore wind had whipped up the North Sea under a storm cloud but there was a layer of brightness which illuminated the horizon with its wind turbines. The two piers and the lighthouse at the mouth of the River Blyth are also clearly visible.

Whitley Bay is on the North East coast of England and is not blessed with wall to wall sunshine too often, but this July morning it looked as if it might have been on the Mediterranean coast (with a bit of imagination!). St Mary's Island and Lighthouse can be spotted through the gap in the sculpture.

Daybreak on Cambois beach
Cambois is a former mining village in South East Northumberland situated between the mouth of the River Wansbeck in the north and the estuary of the River Blyth in the south. There has been a settlement in Cambois since medieval times but the village had its heyday in the middle of the nineteenth century with the establishment of Cambois Colliery. The beach is now pristine the mining and very popular with dog walkers. This image was taken just after daybreak on a cold January morning.

The Flying Dutchman is a two masted schooner built in 1903 and is used these days mostly for cruises. The view over the lake towards the mountains is spectacular and even in June, there is still snow showing on the mountain tops. This particular June day was almost wind free which made the lake surface like a mirror; great for those on holiday and encouraging for anyone wanting to try out the pedalo!

Morpeth Clock Tower
The Clock Tower at Morpeth in Northumberland was constructed between the years 1604 and 1632. It was build with stone from the ruins of the nearby Newminster Abbey and the walls are up to three and a half feet thick. A belfry with a peal of six bells was added in 1703. Quiet morning at St Mary's Island

Although no longer an operating lighthouse, it has become a popular tourist attraction and is captured here on a calm, quiet August morning just after high tide with the lighthouse beautifully reflected in the rockpools close to the causeway.
Siberian Bellflower on Garden Wall
Siberian Bellflowers are trailing perennial flowers with star shaped flowers in a variety of lavender and blue shades. The flowers are native to the Dinaric Alps which range from Italy through the former Yugoslavia rather than Siberia as the name suggests. These examples were spotted growing on a garden wall in Blyth, Northumberland in the North East of England.

Antique Plate Tall Ship
The Ketch rigged Tall Ship William II started life as the Haabet, built in Denmark in 1914. The ship is now berthed at Blyth in Northumberland for restoration prior to re-tracing the voyage of another Blyth built ship which was the first to discover land in Antarctica. The High Level Bridge is a road and rail bridge spanning the River Tyne at Newcastle upon Tyne. Using 5050 tons of iron, the bridge was completed in June 1849.
