Dartmouth is a unique and historic port. The town is full of boutique shops and galleries. The town is world famous for the Britannia Royal Naval College which over looks the town and river. Dartmouth Castle has guarded the mouth of the river for over 600 years. On the other side of the river is Kingwear which has a steam train service too and from Paignton. Originally meant to be the final embarkation port of the Mayflower and Pilgrim fathers in 1620. However, the accompanying ship, the Speedwell, started to take on water so they had to dock in Plymouth for repairs.

The Mayflower Steps Memorial. The actual Mayflower Steps are believed to be about 40 yards to the right of this photo beneath the ladies toilets in the Admiral Macbride pub. The memorial was built in about 1934 on what was originally a small pier.

Smeatons Tower was the third of four Eddystone lighthouses originally sited 14 miles West of Plymouth. And was in use from 1759 to 1882. As technology moved on it was too small contain modern machinery so it was dismantled and rebuilt on a new granite base on Plymouth Hoe and opened in September 1884. Plymouth is Englands Ocean City. As the name suggests it has a strong connection with the Navy and the walls are decorated with photos of naval vessels and plaques.
