This little known but spectacular mountain in south east Iceland forms part of the Krossasnesfjall range. It is composed of gabbro which is a dark volcanic rock and is connected to Vestrahorn by a coastline of black sands. Here the soft golden hues of the late afternoon sunshine belie the bitter temperatures of a February day in Iceland.
Hvalnes is a small peninsula in south east Iceland with a black pebble beach that is several kilometres long. It forms part of a nature reserve and is highly valued for birdwatching and photography.
