Known as 'The Purton Hulks' dozens of old ships and barges were deliberately beached to counter river bank erosion and to protect the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal.
Oliver's castle is an iron age hill fort, more properly called Bromham hill fort. The name Oliver is associated with the Battle of Roundway when Sir Willam Waller's 2500 cavalry camped nearby for three nights.
The gullies down which Parliamentary cavalry met their deaths are seen in the foreground.
