Medieval building in the Town of Chinon - Loire Valley, France
The town is small and tightly nestled between the chateau on top of the hill and the Vienne River. In medieval times, the River provided access for ships traveling up and down the Vienne from as far as the Atlantic Ocean. A good place to start is on the riverbank by the statue of Francois Rabelais. From the statue make your way towards the hill into the center of Chinon, as did Joan of Arc so long ago. The most interesting street in town is rue Voltaire, cobbled and lined with beautifully restored old houses, cafes, shops and restaurants, many of which date back to the fifteenth century.
