Branscombe Cliffs in Devon
The evening winter sun on the cliffs near Branscombe in East Devon, taken from the top of Beer Head and looking west along the coast at the the landslip called Under Hooken and Hooken beach towards Sidmouth and beyond. The low sun shows up the shape of the shingle beach below and a warm glow on the Jurassic cliffs. A little lookout hut can be seen along the cliff top.
Venus over Sidmouth beach
A long exposure of the beach near Jacobs Ladder in Sidmouth, Devon. The time is about 1 hour after sunset and there is a light smudge which is Venus, showing in the diffuse light. There is some artificial light on the beach giving a red glow, from the Jacobs ladder light behind. The distant lights are from the Torquay area.

A view from Smoothlands towards the Cow and Calf rocks and Upright cliff, between Hartland Quay and Hartland Point on the NW Devon coast. Taken on a bright and hazy day in March. Showing the layered rocks and erosion typical of the area. The beach is not easily accessible and has no name on the OS map.

An intense post sunset over the sands on Woolacombe beach in North Devon. Looking towards Baggy point. Zoomed in to the get the best colour range, this long exposure was taken on winters day at low tide after dusk in February. The beach was nearly empty of people and the last surfers had just left the waves. The colourful sky is reflected in the smooth wet sand
Barricane Beach
Sunset over the rocky Barricane Beach in North Devon very near Woolacombe. The setting sunlight, sharp rocky shapes reflected in rock pools with gulls swirling in silhouette against the red sky. Small points of reflected light show in the still water. This a winter shot taken in February at low tide.
Salcombe Mouth in East Devon
A blustery sunny day on the south coast of East Devon near Salcombe Mouth. Salcombe Mouth is a valley below Salcombe Regis and not far from Sidmouth. Part of the Jurassic coast with sand stone in the beach giving the waters edge a sandy red colour. The light and cloud giving lots of contrast

A view from the ancient Ion age hill top fort of Cadbury in Mid Devon. This early summers shot shows crops and the characteristic red soil of the area. In the distance is another Hill top strong hold called Raddon Top. The village of Cadbury is just out of view to the right and Bowey farm in the middle distance.

This was taken on a May evening with a dynamic sky and extended exposure, The light reflects off the rock in the foreground and the sun behind the clouds gives warm colourful light without over exposing,
Instow at Low Tide
Instow in North Devon taken on a winters day at low tide with the mad flats exposed. Looking towards the bridge at Torrington over the river Torridge. A trimaran rests at its mooring awaiting the next high tide and the boat yard at Appledore can be seen on the righthand side Rendered in black and white.
The Hardknott Pass
The upper part of the Hardknott pass in Cumbria on an Autumn day with Raven Crag on the left, Peathill Crag on the right and Hardknott Gill in the centre. Sunlight backed by deep coloured clouds create a pleasing contrast. This steep pass can be a challenge to drive but gives many views and many rewarding aspects.

Taken on a spring day in March with very clear sunny conditions. Although there was a stiff offshore cold breeze at the time.

Welcome Mouth
Taken from Knap head looking south along the coast to Welcome Mouth and Marsland Cliff and Gull Rock. Taken in August with heather and gorse flowers on the heathy slopes. This rocky part of the south west coast path offers challenging and rewarding walks with many a view in all seasons.
Hartland from Gull Rock
A view from the headland of Gull Rock looking south to Hartland Quay and beyond late on a summers day with surf, dramatic light and clouds. This part of the coast with distorted strata and weather beaten cliffs is a wonderful place of raw nature. Looking over Blegberry beach Dyers Point and all the way to Sharpnose Point. The sheer cliffs of Dyers Lookout are smooth and awesome.
Hartland Quay at dusk
A long exposure view of the rocky headland of Screda Point near Hartland Quay with a glimpse of Lundy Island in North West Devon. As this location faces Westwards the sunset season is all year long. This is a summer image taken in June with the sun setting in the North West. This wild stretch of coast is battered by the Atlantic storms and large tidal flows into varied and starkly beautiful shapes together with the contorted strata. This was an exposure of a little over 2 mins

An area of some of the finest stretches of the SW coastal path. The rugged coast line often confronts the power of the Atlantic gales.

Porth Nanven in Cornwall

Porth Nanven the mouth of the Cot Valley is notable for the remarkable round stones. These stones from the the cliff behind the beach and are morraine deposits from the Ice age and now being released onto the beach by erosion.

Dartmoor from Bonehill Downs
A view point from Bell Tor rocks Bonehill downs towards the Widecombe area and Hameldown over the valley of the small West Webburn River. Taken in the morning on a sunny January day. This shows the tapestry of fields giving way to the upland moor areas covered last years bracken.
A bucolic evening on Hele Payne Farm
Low light grazing the field while the sheep are also grazing the grass in this farmland scene from Devon near Bradninch. Hele Payne is a delightful well cared farm amongst Duchy land and looking specially good this year after good rains and sun to promote growing.
The Exe Valley
A view from the hills near Silverton over the Exe valley taken on a December day with low sun casting long shadows over the curves of the rolling hills and fields. This is a special part of the Exe valley where the river emerges from the last of the hills into a flat plain before reaching Exeter. This shows the intricate field systems typical of Devon and also trees clinging to the last of the leaves in what has been a long and beautiful Autumn.

Boats in the basin of the lock on Exeter canal at Turf locks taken on a winters day. The still water gives clear reflections, The light and clouds gave a mood of mystery and beauty and rich silvery tones. The canal provides navigation from the Exe Estuary to the water front in the centre of Exeter avoiding Countess Wear

Hartland Twilight
A beach near Hartland just south of Screda cove by Spekes Mill in North Devon taken after sunset, showing the out going tide revealing dark shiny rock formations reaching out to sea. A beach that is difficult to traverse in the near darkness and access to the beach is aided by a large fixed rope.

Topsham over Exeter Canal
Taking as the sun broke through the clouds on a winters evening to give dramatic light over Exeter canal and reed beds towards boat masts and buildings near Topsham and Exeter in Devon. The estuary of River Exe, unseen here, is in between and attracts 1000's of birds. Illuminated birds can be seen flying high here in against the dark clouds.
The South Downs
A view from Beddingham Hill on the South Downs Way of Mount Caburn, Lewes and the Ouse valley. Taken on a blustery summers day in August, looking north across the typical landscape of the area in East Sussex. Lewes is the county town of East Sussex. This is a short distance from Iford and a YHA with a good walkers cafe
Poldhu Cove on the Lizard
The small surfing cove called Poldu on the west side of the Lizard peninsular in Cornwall. Taken on a sunny winters day with gentle waves and pretty clouds over the sand, with the stream creating sand patterns. A lovely place for many activities from a winters stroll to good surfing and a delightful beach cafe open for a long season.
The Exe Valley
The Exe valley from the hills above Silverton near Christ Cross, Taken at the end of a cloudy day when the sun suddenly started to burst through and create patches of intense light, rays and shafts of light . A tiny part of the River Exe is visible and shows as a shiny patch. This is a Mid Devon scene that I often return to
Porth Nanven in Cornwall
A long exposure taken in July at sunset of Porth Nanven on the far west of Cornwall near the Cape looking towards the off shore rocks called The Brisons. Porth Naven is at the mouth of the Cot valley. The rounded beach and rocks are a site of special scientific significance.
The Old Severn Bridge
From the mud flats at low tide with the lights reflected in the shiny surface, here is the elegant structure of the Old Severn Road bridge in Avon. The tower supports electric cables across the river estuary. The bridge crosses the Severn River estuary and is a classic suspension bridge
Topsham Waterfront in Devon
A view of Topsham from across the River Exe from the Canal Lock Cafe. A delightful little town, just outside of Exeter on the tidal Exe estuary with strong nautical connections dating back to the civil war and wide views of the water. This view was taken in July on a lovely sunny afternoon and well suited to Black and White.
The Exe Valley
Near Thorverton the River Exe passes through some picturesque hills and farm land where the fields form a random tapestry. Also from this hill you can see right to Sidmouth gap, a landscape feature that can be seen from many locations in Devon. Here the Harvest is just days before being gathered. This is an image stitched from 5 images. A summer scene taken in August
Cornish coast near Porthtowan
A summer shot showing patches of flowering heather on the North Cornwall coast. This was just North East of Porthtowan towards Chapel Porth and St Agnes head. The disused mine of Chy is just visible. The sea shows the rich colours typical of Cornwall on a sunny day, with a little lazy surf.
