Sheer Chalk Cliffs near Beachy Head Lighthouse East Sussex
A view of one of several dramatic headlands to the west of Beachy Head in East Sussex. The white chalk cliffs of the Sussex coast offer some of the finest coastal scenery in the UK and are now part of the South Downs National Park. The soft rock is vulnerable to erosion and rockfalls are common, you can clearly see where a rectangular slab has collapsed at the bottom of this cliff. Beachy Head's lighthouse entered service in 1902 and was manually operated until 1983, it is now automatic.
