Firle Tower East Sussex
A view of Firle Tower and the surrounding countryside at the foot of the South Downs hills in East Sussex. The tower is a listed building and was built in 1819 by the landowner (the Third Viscount Gage) as a game-keepers cottage. It was located on a low hill, which allowed the game-keeper to signal to the keeper of a nearby deer park at Ringmer (which wasalso on Lord Gage's estate).

Alpacas (Vicugna pacos) in their high altitude puna grassland habitat near the 6071m /19,918ft high Guallatiri volcano in northern Chile. The volcano is one of the most active in northern Chile. This area is part of the Las Vicunas National Reserve and also the Lauca Biosphere Reserve; recognised by UNESCO in 1981.

In the background is the perfect cone of the Parinacota volcano (6330m / 20,765ft); said to be the highest symmetrical conical volcano in the world. Lake Chungará was formed by a lava dam during an eruption, at 4517m /14,820ft it is one of the highest large lakes in South America. The Park is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.

Historic timber framed buildings Tonbridge
These fine old historic timber-framed buildings are on the High Street close to The Chequers Inn in Tonbridge, Kent. Like The Chequers the buildings date from the late 15th century, in those days they housed the White Hart Inn. Nowadays they are home to the well known The Bakehouse artesan bakery, with attached coffee shop and tea rooms.

The Chequers is one of the most famous historic buildings in Tonbridge and said to be one of the finest examples of a Kentish timber-framed building that still exists today. Situated on the High Street close to the River Medway, the current building dates from the late 15th century though there has been an inn on the site since possibly 1264. In the left background is the gatehouse of Tonbridge castle.

On the left the mound is the motte of the original old motte and bailey fort, which was built soon after the Norman Conquest to guard what has long been an important crossing point of the River Medway. Part of the moat that was also dug at this time (around 50,000 tonnes of earth were moved and used to make the motte) can still be seen nearby.

Lavernock Point (Trwyn Larnog in Welsh) lies to the south of Cardiff and Penarth and is part of the beautiful Glamorgan Heritage Coast in South Wales. The Point marks the lower limit of the Severn estuary and the start of the Bristol Channel; Sand Point in Somerset is the equivalent marker on the southen / English shore. The area is famous for its unusual and distinctive geology, this image shows a part of the impressive grey Carboniferous Limestone beds and formations that are exposed at low tide. The Hurlers is a group of prehistoric stone circles near Minions on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall. Legend says they were once a group of men who were transformed into stones as divine punishment for playing Cornish hurling on a Sunday.....! Around half the stones are still standing.

Some of the standing stones at The Hurlers, a group of three stone circles near Minions on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall in south west England. They have diameters of between 42m /138ft and 33m / 108ft and around half the stones are still present. According to legend they were once a group of men who were playing Cornish hurling on a Sunday and were transformed into stones as punishment, hence the name.....! The building in the background was once the Housemans engine house and part of the South Phoenix tin mine; it is now the Minions Heritage Centre.

Polkerris harbour at low tide Cornwall
Polkerris is a tiny fishing village near Fowey on the south coast of Cornwall. It was an important fishing port as early as the 16th century, and the village became part of the Rashleigh family's Menabilly Estate around the same time. Today the village lives as much from tourism as fishing. Much of the surrounding region has been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is noted for its spectacular coastal scenery.
The Rashleigh Inn Polkerris Cornwall
Polkerris is a tiny fishing village near Fowey on the south coast of Cornwall. The village became part of the Rashleigh family's Menabilly Estate in the late 16th century, the white building in the centre of this image is the Rashleigh Inn. It was an important fishing port as early as the 16th century though today the village lives as much from tourism as fishing. Watersports are a popular activity, hence the windsurfing boards lined up on the beach.

The Union Jack flag above the Middlesex Guildhall building in London on a sunny winter's day. The building is located on the southwest corner of Parliament Square in Westminster (close to Westminster Abbey). Since 2009 it is the home of both the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Construction started in 1906, the Guildhall originally served as an administrative and court centre for the County of Middlesex, hence the name.

Late afternoon sunshine lights up the Elizabeth Tower, which houses the world famous Great Clock of Westminster. Big Ben, the common name, is actually the nickname of the largest of the 5 bells inside the tower. The exterior is clad with sand-coloured Anston limestone bricks which glow with a beautiful golden colour in the right light.

The Shard and apartment buildings London

The Shard is located next to London Bridge Station in Southwark, has 72-storeys and is 309.6m / 1,016ft high. It is still the tallest building in the United Kingdom, when it was completed in 2012 it was briefly the tallest building in Europe (it now ranks as 7th tallest). Apart from The Shard, the other thing that caught my eye in this shot was the couple sitting out on their balcony about half way up the building on the right, oblivious to the views and all the scaffolding surrounding them!

A person looks for artefacts on the northern foreshore of the River Thames in central London at low tide on a stormy afternoon. The buildings opposite are on the Albert Embankment and include the Westminster Tower (L) and International Maritime Organization offices (centre). The word mudlark was commonly used in the 18th and 19th centuries to describe people who made a living in this way, selling whatever finds they could. Modern mudlarks are often amateur historians and hobbyists using metal detectors to search for artefacts and require a licence to operate which is administered jointly by the Port of London Authority or the Crown Estate (the largest land owners of Thames foreshore).

It connects the Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square; the arch in the photo is part of the Admiralty Arch at the northeast / Trafalgar Square end of The Mall. This image was taken after the parades for the Trooping the Colour, a ceremony performed by regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies that also marks the official birthday of the King or Queen. It takes place on a Saturday in June and is a major London tourist attraction.

Firle Tower East Sussex

The tower is a listed building and was built in 1819 by the landowner (the Third Viscount Gage) as a game-keepers cottage. It was located on a low hill, which allowed the game-keeper to signal to the keeper of a nearby deer park at Ringmer (which wasalso on Lord Gage's estate).

Flowering forget-me-nots
The cute little blue flowers of the forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica) are a common sight across much of Europe in spring. Also called the wood or woodland forget-me-not, the flowers are small, usually less than 1cm across. There are many cultivars of the species which are popular as bedding plants in gardens.
Wood anemone cultivar
This unusual flower was growing among lots of wood anemones in an old churchyard. I think it must be an anemone cultivar of some sort, the petals and leaves are very similar to the wood anemone but it has extra frills of petals in the centre of the flower. The wood anemone (Anemonoides nemorosa) is a beautiful and well known flower that appears mainly in shady woodlands in early spring.
Forget-me-nots in bloom
The cute little blue flowers of the forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica) are a common sight across much of Europe in spring. The beautiful demoiselle damselfly, (Calopteryx virgo) is a common damselfly in southern and western parts of the UK and is also found in most of Europe. It is usually found near fast-flowing streams and rivers in the summer months. The brownish orange wings show this is a female; males have dark blue wings and their bodies are more blue in colour.

Wild garlic flowers (Allium ursinum) are a common sight in spring in damp woodlands across much of Europe. Thick-legged flower beetle
A thick-legged flower beetle (Oedemera nobilis) on the flower of an ox-eye / oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare). They are a common and distinctive beetle in most of western Europe, especially Mediterranean regions (where they are also found in North Africa). Since the mid 1990s they have also expanded to the British Isles and are now quite common in southern England too. Only the males have the thick bulbous hind legs.
Emerging Mayfly climbing stem
Mayflies are aquatic insects, the naiads or nymphs live on the bottoms of rivers. Thy are unusual in that they have 2 adult stages in their lifecycle. When the time comes the nymphs moult into winged intermediate adult stage (called a subimago) and emerge from the water, often by climbing using the stems of aquatic plants as in this image. They then undergo a final moult into the breeding adult (or imago). There are 51 species of mayfly found in the British Isles, and over 3,000 worldwide. I'm not exactly sure which species this one is; it could be the March brown mayfly (Rhithrogena germanica, famous for copies being one of the most popular artificial flies used for fly fishing) or the similar and more widespread late March brown or false March brown (Ecdyonurus venosus).

A church has stood on the site since Saxon times though most of the current building dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. This window shows Jesus and some of his disciples and dates from 1871. A beautiful late spring / early summer´s day next to the River Medway at Haysden near Tonbridge, Kent. The bridge carries the Tonbridge to Redhill railway line, part of the first line from London to Dover and built in 1836 by the South Eastern Railway. The main line now takes a more direct route from London to Tonbridge, this route now offers a cross country service and connections to Gatwick Airport.
Train Crossing River Medway at Haysden Kent
An electric passenger train operated by Southern (a subsidiary of Govia) crosses the River Medway at Haysden shortly before arriving at Tonbridge. This line, which runs from Tonbridge to Redhill, was built in 1836 by the South Eastern Railway as part of the first railway from London to Dover. A newer, more direct main line route now carries most of the rail traffic from London to Tonbridge; this line is now more used as a local service with connections to Gatwick Airport.

Comma Butterfly on Blackthorn Flowers
A comma butterfly (Polygonia c-album) feeding on the flowers of a blackthorn or sloe tree (Prunus spinosa) in early spring. The blackthorn's flowers are among the first to appear in spring, adding colour to leafless woods and hedges and also providing food for early butterflies. The comma is a distinctive butterfly that has been becoming more common in England in recent times. This image was taken on a section of the High Weald Walk near Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
White Bluebell Flower
An unusual white version of a common or English bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) among the more normal blue flowers. This beautiful flower is native to north western Europe and the UK, and is the species that produces the famous blue carpets known as bluebell woods in spring. It is an indicator species for ancient woodlands and a protected species in the UK.

Ox-eye daisies are a large daisy that can grow to 60cm / 24" or more in height and are native to Europe and western temperate Asia.
Lords and Ladies Plant
The unusual Lords-and-ladies plant (Arum maculatum, often called cuckoo-pint) is a common sight in woodlands and roadsides in the UK in spring and early summer. Its tiny flowers (both male and female) are tucked away beneath the dark brown inflorescence or spadix; this emits an unpleasant aroma to attract insects to pollinate the flowers. In the autumn the upper part of the plant rots away leaving just the stem and a cluster of bright red berrie which are very poisonous.

The forsythias are a genus of flowering plants in the Oleaceae / olive family and mostly native to eastern Asia. Their bright yellow flowers appear in early spring before the leaves. They are a very popular garden and ornamental plant worldwide, first appearing in Europe in the early 19th century. They are named after William Forsyth.

Hastings is home to one of Britain's oldest fishing fleets and the largest beach (as opposed to harbour) based fishing fleet in Europe. The black timber buildings are net shops, built in the the early 19th century and unique to Hastings. They were used to store nets and gear rather than for hanging nets up to dry (they have several floors inside). At the time they were built there was very limited space on the shingle beach for buildings, hence the the tall thin design.

A Survivor of the Great Storm of 1987 Knole Park Kent
This unusually shaped beech tree (Fagus sylvatica) is in Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent. The main trunk broke off during the Great Storm of October 1987 which blew over, damaged or destroyed thousands of trees in southern England. The Sevenoaks area was particularly affected, the town also lost 6 of the 7 oaks for which it is named. Autumnal bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) always adds some glorious colour to autumn and winter landscapes!
