The cathedral on the hill. St James Park has been the home of Newcastle United was originally built in 1880 and now has a capacity of over 52000 people and is almost in the centre of the city. This image shows the River Tyne flowing into the North Sea between the piers at North and South Shields on a lovely June morning. The ancient walls of Tynemouth Castle can be seen on the left hand side of the photograph together with some of the small craft from Tynemouth Sailing Club at Priors Haven.

Take the promenade to the island
St Marys Lighthouse and island lie north of the River Tyne and Whitley Bay on the North Sea coast of England. The lighthouse is no longer in operation and is now a museum and tourist attraction which is only accessible at low tide when the causeway is not under water. The image was taken after High Tide on a mild March morning shortly after sunrise from the promenade leading to the island itself.
Super Silhouetted Sirmione Sunset
The beautiful town of Sirmione is situated at the end of a peninsular at the south end of Lake Garda in Northern Italy. This image was shot from the eastern side of the historical centre of the resort and the clear, still water of the lake reflected the evening sky and the tourist hotspots as the sun disappeared over the horizon at the end of another lovely May day.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge (sometimes known as the blinking eye bridge) spans the River Tyne between Gateshead Arts Quarter and the Newcastle Quayside. It is a pedestrian and cycle bridge first opened to the public in 2001 and was the first tilting bridge ever to be constructed.

The image was taken on a very cold February morning shortly after the sun had managed to break through the cloud cover just after sunrise. With the tide retreating, rock pools were left behind which reflected the lighthouse.

The sandy bay at Cullercoats in the North East of England is enclosed by two small piers and was once a thriving fishing village in the early 1800s and is now home to the Dove Marine Laboratory (Newcastle University) and an RNLI Lifeboat station. Today, in this beautiful hilltop town in Tuscany, there are only 14 towers left out of the 72 original ones. A woman has just about made her mind up to buy a painting, but cannot resist looking at others on offer in the artists workshop. The image was spotted on a walk through the Italian lakeside town of Torri del Benaco on Lake Garda and the contrast of light and dark as well as the colour made a striking image.

This panorama image was taken on the western side of the Sirmione Peninsular on an overcast day with the morning light reflecting off the clear waters of the lake. The mountains in the distance still had a misty covering and a blue haze before the sun broke through for another typical Lake Garda day.

The Auberge d'Auvergne et Provence can be seen an a narrow street in Birgu (Vittoriosa) Malta. This building was built in the 1530s by The Order of St John to house the Knights of the langues of Auvergne and Provence until larger buildings were constructed in Valletta later in the same century.

Hastings Garden is located on top of the bastions on the West side of the entrance to Valletta; the recently embellished gardens offer a magnificent view of Floriana, Msida, Sliema, Manoel Island and Marsamxett Harbour and is the home to a monument raised in honor of Lord Hastings who was a former British governor of Malta. Even though the gardens are relatively small they are still very attractive and provide a quiet, shaded place to rest away from the bustle of Valletta itself. This image shows some of the shaded areas and one of the typical Maltese look out towers on the city bastions.

The 2016 Tall Ships Regatta gathered at the Port of Blyth in Northumberland for the first time in its sixty years of existence. This image shows the two Dutch vessels the Morgenster (a Brig) and the Oosterschelde (a three masted topsail schooner) berthed on the River prior to the race from Blyth to Gothenburg.

Seaton Sluice Watch House - Panorama
The Watch House on Rocky Island in Seaton Sluice was opened on 14th January 1880, built for the Seaton Sluice Volunteer Life-Saving Company which was founded earlier in 1876. The building served as an auxiliary coast guard station until 1990. The building is now a museum owned by Northumberland County Council and run in collaboration with the Local History Society. This image was shot as the sun rose behind the Watch House, illuminating the golden sky and was then given a panorama crop.

These vibrant wild poppies have bloomed unexpectedly on an overgrown building site in Blyth, Northumberland. The beauty of their texture and colour is a reminder of the wild nature that surrounds us. Unfortunately, the building work prevented these poppies from seeding themselves and coming back the following year.

Rocky Island in Seaton Sluice Northumberland was formed when a channel was cut through the headland to to provide a new entrance to the small tidal harbour between 1761 and 1764. The small island is a popular place for dog walking and just taking a seat to enjoy the view northwards over the sandy bay towards Blyth.

After a prolonged period of dry weather, there was overnight rain and this really perked up the wild flowers in the sand dunes between Blyth and Seaton Sluice in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. This image features a couple of Dog Roses (Rosa canina) and some Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum) looking nicely refreshed under a blue sky.

There are two piers at the mouth of the River Blyth in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. This image was taken from the end of the Old Wooden Pier looking out over fishermen towards Cambois Pier and lighthouse as a fishing boat was entering the river after a day's work.

Azaleas are flowering shrubs of the Rhododendron family and can be evergreen or deciduous and are suitable for growing in pots on a patio. This particular specimen has lovely shiny leaves which stay with the shrub all year long providing interest long after the lovely red flowers have died off.

There cannot be many better simple pleasures than messing about in a boat on a calm river under a blue sky and summer sunshine, and there cannot be many better places to do it than Knaresborough. The picturesque town of Knaresborough is situated on the River Nidd in North Yorkshire and is rightly famous as a market and spa town. There have been boats for hire on the river for many decades and the pastime is just as popular today as it ever was.

This day in May was overcast and with rain threatening, the number of people using the lake ferries was reduced, but the attraction of this lovely place was still evident.

This is not what the tourists or the hoteliers of Sirmione were hoping for in the middle of May! A particularly wet day on Lake Garda in the main piazza of Sirmione with bedraggled tourists huddled under umbrellas in the unusually wet and cold conditions with everybody but the ducks complaining!!! Tynemouth Long Sands on the North East Coast of England pictured on a warm summer morning, but with a cold wind. This stretch of beach is very popular at all times of the year with dog walkers and strollers, and this image shown the northerly view just as the sun managed to break through the cloud cover and seemed to illuminate both the beach and the surf.

Collingwood took over as commander following the death of Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. Four cannon from his ship Royal Sovereign are mounted at the base of the monument. Misty March Morning
A very cold March sunrise from the beach at Blyth in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. The relatively (!!) warm North Sea has caused the cold air to leave a light mist over the water and a low lying cloud has produced a very Turner like image (well it does to my mind!) but these conditions were not bad enough to put off the surfers who braved the weather.

The Clock Tower and Drinking Fountain at the east end of the street in North Tyneside on the North East coast of England. The Priory is thought to have been founded in the early part of the seventh century and is the burial place of three kings; Edwin of Northumbria was the first in 651a.d. then Osred, King of Northumbria in 792a.d. and finally Malcolm III King of Scotland in 1093. Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch House
The Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch House is situated on cliffs at the mouth of the River Tyne in North East England. This building was the first of its kind to be formed in 1864 and it is still used as an operational base for the emergency services as well as a museum. The building was re-opened in 2014 after major restoration works carried out with the help of a Heritage Lottery Fund award. This image was captured on a sunny March morning.

This image was shot near the ramp at the southern end of the promenade at Whitley Bay, North Tyneside looking north along the beach towards St Mary's Island and lighthouse on a windy and cold February afternoon. The Upper Barrakka Gardens, ancient fortifications and the Victoria Gate a clearly visible together with the seemingly every present crane against the skyline.

A traditional Maltese boat (Id djhajsa) once used as a ferry boat, but now a tourist attraction is seen making its way along the Grand Harbour against the background of the Maltese capital city Valletta. There is a four mile stretch of sandy beach between Blyth and Seaton Sluice in Northumberland on the North East coast of England. This image was shot on a bitterly cold December morning under a cloudless clear blue sky with the last sighting of last night's moon and it might be mistaken for summer were it not for the frozen sand and the equally frozen photographer!

Fort St Elmo is situated at the end of the peninsula which houses the city of Valletta and is positioned to give it a view of both the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour, with a history going back centuries. It played an enormous part in defending Malta during The Great Siege by the Ottoman Empire in 1565. Today it houses the National War Museum and The Siege Bell war memorial. These warehouses were used for the storage of silk, dried fruits and olive oil going westwards, and for the storage of food and arms arriving in port. The warehouses were rented to local merchants and European agents. The area was bombed during the second World War and were re-constructed together with the ancient seawall which was originally built by the Knights of Saint John. Mdina was once the capital city of Malta before Valletta took the honour and is know as 'The Silent City'

North Sea Sunrise
Dramatic sunrise over the Northumbrian coast off the beach at Blyth. A strong onshore wind had whipped up the North Sea under a storm cloud but there was a layer of brightness which illuminated the horizon with its wind turbines. The two piers and the lighthouse at the mouth of the River Blyth are also clearly visible.

Whitley Bay is on the North East coast of England and is not blessed with wall to wall sunshine too often, but this July morning it looked as if it might have been on the Mediterranean coast (with a bit of imagination!). St Mary's Island and Lighthouse can be spotted through the gap in the sculpture.

Morpeth Clock Tower
The Clock Tower at Morpeth in Northumberland was constructed between the years 1604 and 1632. It was build with stone from the ruins of the nearby Newminster Abbey and the walls are up to three and a half feet thick. A belfry with a peal of six bells was added in 1703. Quiet morning at St Mary's Island
St Mary's Island and lighthouse are situated off the North East coast of England just north of Whitley Bay. Although no longer an operating lighthouse, it has become a popular tourist attraction and is captured here on a calm, quiet August morning just after high tide with the lighthouse beautifully reflected in the rockpools close to the causeway.
Siberian Bellflower on Garden Wall
Siberian Bellflowers are trailing perennial flowers with star shaped flowers in a variety of lavender and blue shades. The flowers are native to the Dinaric Alps which range from Italy through the former Yugoslavia rather than Siberia as the name suggests. These examples were spotted growing on a garden wall in Blyth, Northumberland in the North East of England.

Antique Plate Tall Ship
The Ketch rigged Tall Ship William II started life as the Haabet, built in Denmark in 1914. The ship is now berthed at Blyth in Northumberland for restoration prior to re-tracing the voyage of another Blyth built ship which was the first to discover land in Antarctica. The image has been given an antique plate filter in keeping with its vintage.

The Rendezvous Cafe is an iconic art deco style cafe and ice cream shop on the promenade at Whitley Bay, North Tyneside on the North East coast of England. The building was designed and erected in 1930 as the Garden Restaurant and re-named The Rendezvous Cafe in 1957. It has been featured in a prime time advert for BP and more recently has been used in the filming of the TV crime drama 'Vera'.

Each night there was a fireworks display over the river and this image has caught the silhouette of a ship against the background of the fireworks with a crew member standing in the rigging and spotlights lighting up the evening sky.
The High Level Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne -Monochrome
The High Level Bridge is a road and rail bridge spanning the River Tyne at Newcastle upon Tyne. Using 5050 tons of iron, the bridge was completed in June 1849. This image shows the arches over the pedestrian walkway at the side of the bridge with a group of people walking towards the Gateshead side of the bridge.

Newcastle upon Tyne cathedral and 'new' castle
The castle and cathedral of Newcastle upon Tyne taken from the Gateshead quayside. The 'new castle' was built in 1177 on the site of a Roman fort which was built to protect the river crossing and bridge over the River Tyne. The Cathedral also dates from roughly the same period (1091) and was heavily restored in 1777. The image has been given a 'peeling paint' and a mono filter to age it somewhat.

Tynemouth Pier storm in the style of Cezanne
This image was taken on a very blustery day in January with the North Sea crashing into Tynemouth Pier and the early morning sunshine lighting up the sea outside the shadow of the pier itself . Work on the pier was started in 1854 and it was originally curved, but storm damage to the central part of the pier led to it being re-built in a straight line. The image has been given an artistic filter in the style of Cezanne for something just a little bit different.
